When you're ready to expand (and when you're not)
Not every Etsy seller should rush to add Shopify. Expanding at the wrong time creates more work without proportional reward. Here are the signals that you're genuinely ready.
Why you should NOT close your Etsy shop
Every year, sellers open Shopify stores with the intention of migrating away from Etsy entirely. Most of them quietly reopen their Etsy shops within six months. Here's why.
Etsy is a marketplace with built-in traffic. Over 90 million buyers actively search Etsy for products. Your Shopify store starts with zero traffic. Building an audience from scratch through SEO, social media, and paid advertising takes months and real budget.
The smart approach is to run both. Use Etsy for discovery. Use Shopify for brand ownership and direct customer relationships. When an Etsy buyer purchases from you, include a card in the package that mentions your direct store. Over time, loyal customers migrate to where you can build a real relationship with them.
Running both platforms does create an inventory management challenge, but that's a solved problem. Our guide to selling handmade products on multiple platforms covers the full playbook for managing this transition. The alternative, abandoning Etsy's organic traffic entirely, costs far more than any tool subscription.
Most sellers find that after expanding, Etsy still generates the majority of new customer discovery while Shopify captures the repeat and direct traffic. Neither channel goes away. They serve different purposes in the same business.
Setting up your Shopify store: what to prioritize
Shopify has dozens of settings, apps, and customization options. Trying to perfect everything before launching will keep you from launching at all. Here's what matters in the first 30 days.
Custom domain first
Your domain is your brand. Register yourshopname.com before anything else. Shopify makes it easy to connect a custom domain, and a professional URL is the first thing customers see. Avoid using your Etsy shop name verbatim if it contains "Etsy" anywhere. Your Shopify store is your independent brand identity.
A clean, fast theme
Shopify's free themes (Dawn, Craft, Crave) are genuinely well-built and fast. Resist the urge to buy a premium theme until you've validated that Shopify is generating revenue. A clean, fast free theme converts better than an over-designed premium one that loads slowly.
Basic SEO on every product page
Unlike Etsy, where buyers find products through Etsy's internal search, Shopify products get indexed by Google. Write unique product titles and descriptions for every product. Include the words buyers actually search for. Add alt text to every image. These basics are worth more than any Shopify app in your first six months.
Shipping and return policies
Write clear, specific policies. Shopify buyers are accustomed to Amazon-level clarity. "Ships in 1-3 business days, free returns within 30 days" converts better than vague language. If your processing time for handmade items is longer, be explicit about it and explain why.
Moving your products to Shopify
You have two approaches to getting your Etsy products into Shopify: export/import via CSV or a connected tool that handles it automatically.
CSV export/import
Etsy lets you export your listings as a CSV. Shopify accepts product imports via CSV. The format differs between the two platforms, so you'll need to remap columns before importing. Images need to be re-uploaded or hosted at accessible URLs. For a catalog of 20-30 products, this is manageable. For 100+ products with multiple variations, it becomes a significant project.
Connected sync with Commerce Kitty
Commerce Kitty imports your Etsy listings directly into your Commerce Kitty catalog and can push them to Shopify from there. This preserves your product data, images, and variation structure without manual CSV manipulation. Once connected, new products you add on one platform can be pushed to the other with a few clicks.
Regardless of how you migrate, plan to spend time optimizing Shopify listings for Google search after migration. Copy-pasted Etsy descriptions are written for Etsy's search algorithm, not Google's.
Running Etsy and Shopify together without chaos
Once both stores are live, your daily operations need to account for two order sources and two inventory pools. Without a system, this doubles your administrative work.
The non-negotiable piece is real-time inventory sync. When you sell on Etsy, your Shopify inventory needs to update immediately, and vice versa. For low-volume sellers (under 5 orders per day combined), manual updates might be feasible. For everyone else, automation is the only practical option.
Connect Etsy and Shopify to Commerce Kitty
Authorize both channels in Commerce Kitty. Your product catalog from each platform imports automatically.
Link your products across platforms
Commerce Kitty suggests automatic matches. Confirm them or link manually. Each linked product pair shares one inventory count.
Manage all orders in one place
Etsy and Shopify orders appear in a single dashboard. Ship once, enter tracking once, and Commerce Kitty updates both platforms.
Building your Shopify customer base
Your Shopify store doesn't get automatic traffic. You have to build that audience, and the best source is your existing Etsy customers.
Package inserts
Every order you ship is a marketing opportunity. Include a small card with your Shopify store URL and an incentive (10% off next order, free shipping on direct orders). Customers who discovered you on Etsy and had a good experience are exactly the kind of buyer you want in your own store.
Email marketing
Shopify lets you collect customer emails at checkout and build an email list. Etsy does not. Start building your list from day one. Even a simple monthly email about new products or behind-the-scenes content keeps your brand top of mind and drives repeat purchases through your direct channel.
SEO-driven product pages
Write product descriptions that answer questions real buyers type into Google. "Sterling silver ring size 7" is a product name. "Sterling silver minimalist stacking ring for women, size 7, nickel-free, perfect for layering" is an SEO-optimized product title. The difference compounds over months into meaningful organic traffic.
Social media pointing to Shopify
Instagram, Pinterest, and TikTok are proven drivers of traffic for handmade sellers. When you post, link to your Shopify store rather than your Etsy shop. Own that traffic relationship. Shopify lets you see exactly where your traffic comes from and retarget buyers who visited without purchasing.
